Tour Details & Highlights

Among those who love adventure, whether on four wheels, or two, a Moab Off Road Tour is a must-do event.

For maybe the first time ever, you’ll experience spectacular scenery so profound you won’t be able to wait to share your experience with your friends, family and co-workers.

Off Roading in Moab = Black Rhino ExpeditionsMoab has a huge range of backcountry trails, from easy, scenic drives to  challenging 4-wheel drive trails, all of them providing an opportunity to experience the beauty and solitude of a backcountry expedition. We will choose our trails wisely, with an honest appraisal of our equipment and consideration of the terrain.

Four-wheel driving difficulty is hard to describe objectively. Opinions will always vary, and even an individual’s judgment may change as they gain experience. The easiest of trails will be suitable for virtually any stock, high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle. The most difficult trails are barely passable even for first-rate off-road equipment. The in-between trails are well within the capabilities of stock four-wheel-drive trucks and utility vehicles.

Spot Mapping - Black Rhino Expeditions - Off Road ToursDuring our four-wheeling, and mountain biking, we’ll be using a SPOT (a satellite tracking device) which will allow those folks who couldn’t make the trip to follow our daly travels on their computer. We’ll supply the link for the arm-chair expeditioners.

Each guest of this Black Rhino Expedition will receive a commemorative 12″ x 12″ coffee table book so be prepared for tons of photos being taken.

Health notice/restrictions: Off-road tours are rough, bumpy rides often through rough terrain. Our off-road Expeditions are not suitable for guests with back problems, neck problems, motion sickness, pregnancy, major medical conditions, or any other health condition(s) that could be aggravated by a bumpy ride through rough terrain.

** NOTE: What if a specific Expedition is canceled? While incredibly rare, from time to time, an Expedition may have to be canceled. For almost all of our events, you will be given the choice to either receive a full refund, or transfer your registration to another event that has openings. For some Expeditions, we may deduct up to a 15% fee from your refund to offset unrecoverable expenses. Due to unforeseen circumstances all Black Rhino Expeditions trips and trails are subject to change or cancellation without advance notice.

What to Expect
Itinerary

Day 1/Night 1Arrive in Moab, Utah

February 9, 2022 – Check into the hotel in Moab, Utah and have an easy evening as we prepare for the next few days.

Day 24x4 Wheeling on 7-Mile Rim Led by Dan Mick's Guided Tours

February 10, 2022 – We’ll leave early to have our first day with Dan Mick’s guide for 4×4 wheeling in Moab.

The Moab off-road experience on the “slickrock” is unparalleled. You’ll be amazed at the scenery- virtually any direction you face would make a gorgeous picture postcard. And you’ll be amazed at what a vehicle can do on this phenomenal terrain.

As a warm-up, we’ll be running Seven Mile Rim Trail. We’ll be driving on two-track dirt road, a sandy hill, wash bottom, and some slickrock. If time permits, we’ll also tackle Wipeout Hill.

Dinner later in the evening will be at a local restaurant.

Day 3SlickRock Trail

February 11, 2022 – Slickrock Trail is arguably the most popular mountain bike trail in the world – more than 100,000 visitors ride it each year.

While the Slickrock Bike Trail is ONLY 12 miles long, it can, and usually does, prove absolutely exasperating.

WARNING: Carry more water than you think you’ll need – lots more. Even on a temperate day, the warm, dry weather and physical exertion can cause dehydration quickly. The moisture just gets sucked out of you. I’m speaking from experience.

Because of the constantly changing terrain, rarely do you leave your easiest gears and “spin” at an easy cadence. Though only 12 miles, most riders should allow 4 hours to ride the entire loop; allow more time if any of the many side routes are explored.

First-time “rockers” should consider riding the 2.3 mile Practice Loop before tackling the entire trail which allows you to get a feel for the trail without venturing too far from the trailhead. Then it’s off to explore the trails.

Day 4More Four-Wheeling - Fins & Things with Dan Mick's Guided Tours

February 12, 2022 – Dan Mick’s guide will lead us on Fins & Things Trail, a 9.8 mile heavily trafficked loop trail that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate.

The dominant characteristic of this trail is its steep slickrock climbs and descents. It is unbelievabley fun and offers fantastic scenery. Many of the large ledges have bypasses, but not all. Short vehicles with high approach and departure angles do best, but many stock SUVs are seen on this trail. The trail is accessible year-round.

Lunch will be on the trail.

Dinner later in the day will be at a local restaurant.

Day 5Mountain Biking - Navajo Rocks Loop

February 13, 2022 – For our Mountain Biking adventure, we’ll be running the Navajo Rock Loop. The Navajo Rocks loop trail system is a 25-minute drive from Moab off highway 313.  This loop combines 5 incredible trails for 17.4 miles of flowy singletrack with lots of short climbs and descents, but nothing too intense.  As you ride, you will hug a huge mesa on Big Mesa trail, ride slickrock domes on Ramblin, hit some rock gardens on Rocky Tops, shred the downhill on Coney Island, and pedal exposed slickrock on Big Lonely.

The loop is a figure-8 shape – that makes it easy to cut it the ride short and ride only half if you are crunched on time, OR energy.  This intermediate trail includes lots of flowy singletrack with some technical sections dispersed throughout, which are easily walkable for beginners and a great challenge for intermediate riders.  The scenery can’t be beat – you will be surrounded by the famous Moab red rock for most of the ride.   Don’t forget to bring tons of water, you will need more than you think!

Dinner will be in later in the evening.

We’ll check out the following morning and make the journey home.

Thanks for joining us on this fun adventure!
